On Being César
In addition to my parents’ teachings, I first learned the importance of humanitarian initiatives and benevolence to others during elementary school at Colegio Santa Cruz in Sao Paulo, where caring for others was so important.
I was able to really put selfless acts into practice on a broader scale at Medical School, where I decided to specialize in Psychiatry and Pain Management at Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital in Sao Paulo, and currently work at the Nonprofit Organization Médicos do Mundo / World´s Doctors.
Undeterred and curious, fascinated by cinema, art, philosophy and literature, I take advantage of different methods to comprehend, sublimate and interpret real life situations.
In my opinion, some of the most fascinating matters of our lifetime came into being as a result of physical or existential pain (e.g. Starry Night by Van Gogh, Faust by Goethe, Madame Butterfly by Puccini, Nocturne by Chopin). My ambition is to guide my patients through a journey of self discovery that will provide them with the emotional tools necessary to have a fulfilling life, even through suffering.

“Psychiatry is like Ballet: it produces something sublime and beautiful through a lot of pain and effort, hiding itself in the perfection of forms.”
Dr César Augusto de Paula Santos
What is psychiatry?
Psychiatry is the medical specialty responsible for mental health care and treatment of mental illness.
The specialty emerged as an offshoot of Neurology.
At the time, many neurologists were studying aspects of mental health and mental illness. They quickly came to the conclusion that this was a new medical specialty—one that was very different from traditional neurological disease and practice.
In the beginning, Psychiatry had a care and observational character.
There were few studies on the human psyche and there were no classifications of diseases (let alone pharmacological treatment for them).
The years have passed and, today, psychiatric illnesses have increased exponentially. However, knowledge and new treatments are also multiplying.
And when should I look?
Like all medical specialties, Psychiatry also has many different diseases with similar symptoms.
The best way to find out if such symptoms refer to a mental illness is to seek professional care.

What do patients say?
“Everything has to change so that things stay the same.”
Giuseppe Di Lampedusa
